In
a development that caused a veritable orgy of excitement and angst, Bethesda softworks
has
announced plans to
develop and publish Fallout
3! As
many of the elite bitterly remember,
project VanBuren (the codename
for a nearly complete Fallout 3) was canned
when Interplay made the brilliant decision to fire
everyone
at
Black
Isle
studios - their only profitable development
branch - and instead focus on the miserable Brotherhood
of Steel console game.
Bethesda softworks has numerous critically acclaimed
game series under their belts including the venerable
Elder Scrolls franchise. If anyone can do the
series justice, it's Bethesda.
Before you start wiping off the tears of joy we
should point out that there's one big nagging problem
with this deal: With the release
of TES:Morrowind,
Bethesda
softworks earned itself a reputation for castrating
historically mature franchises. Past Elder Scrolls
games have
featured mature themes no less shocking than those
in the Fallout games - including both nudity and gore.
And as you may be aware, Morrowind
was developed as a particularly sterile
Teen-rated
title; that is, completely devoid of the blood, gore,
and mature content that fans had come to expect from
that uniquely stark series. For Fallout fans, that
is not a good precedent to follow.
Now that Fallout 3 is going to be a reality,
the question is: "Will it really be
Fallout or
will it be Teletubbies Morrowind with
the Fallout name attached?"
